COCHRAN COTTAGE
ca. 1937-38
317 W. Seventeenth Street

The Cochran Cottage was designed by noted architect Max Mayer for Hal Cochran, the son of H. K. Cochran who lived in the Caruth-Cochran House at 320 W. 18th Street.

The house was designed in a restrained Colonial Revival style that exemplifies Mayer's lineal approach to home-building.  He designed several homes which were largely "one room deep" and took advantage of prevailing breezes for cross ventilation.  This was Mayer's first home with central ducted heat.  It features bay windows in the rear and decorative wall moldings defining panels on the interior walls.

There have been several additions to the property over the years.  Max Goolsby, the owner in the 1970s and 80s, added a pool, terrace and brickwork in the back yard.  He also converted a copper-roofed tool shed into a cabana.  The current owners, Richard and Lenora Steinkamp recently added a pool house and sunroom, designed by Quapaw Quarter resident and local architect John Jarrard.
