FRESE COTTAGE
ca. 1882
1614 Louisiana Street

The Frese Cottage was built about 1882 as a speculative venture by Caldwell Bradshaw, a lawyer.  The original cottage is said to have contained four rooms and a hallway, as well as a kitchen off the back of the house.

In 1898, Bradshaw sold the property to the Frese family.  Mr. Frese was a bookkeeper, and later a CPA.  Members of the Frese family occupied the house until 1950.  The house was later divided into four apartments.  The house was abandoned and suffering from gross neglect when it was purchased for rehabilitation back into a single-family home in 1984.

The cottage is a good example of a working class residence built during the late Victorian period.  It is a vernacular wood sided one-story house with an elaborately trimmed porch and bay window.  Today the charming façade of the cottage remains intact, while the north, west and south elevations have been altered over time.
