TURNER-LEDBETTER HOUSE
ca. 1891-92
1700 Louisiana Street

This Queen Anne-style house was one of the large, expensive residences built during the late 1880s and early 1890s that helped transform the surrounding neighborhood from a dominant population of shopkeepers and clerks into an enclave of the city’s upper-middle class.

The house was built in 1891-1892 by Sue C. Turner, a single businesswoman who built several other prominent houses in the neighborhood.  It was used primarily as rental property until its purchase in 1903 by C. R. Ledbetter.  It remained a single-family residence until the 1960s, when it was converted into seven apartments.

By the early 1970s the house had deteriorated and was condemned by the city.  It stood vacant for about six years before being purchased by Dr. Dan and Sandra Cook in the spring of 1979.  The restoration, in large part done by the Cooks and members of their family, was completed in 2006.  Today the house is one of but a few brick Queen Anne-style houses remaining in Little Rock.
